La Piel que habito (The Skin I Live In)

I can say that a good director is one who makes everything work on the screen, look pretty and so on. A good director knows how to bring the audience, guide them where they want and then move the floor you’re standing in.

Pedro Almodovar succeeds masterfully in this film. And as a warning, this is not a film for everyone. If you are a fan of Almodóvar this film will become one of your favorites, and if not you are going to be deeply impressed.

The story is simple but complex at the same time. A plastic surgeon has done one of the biggest steps of his career: discover the formula for creating artificial skin. The best of this skin is that it lasts longer and is stronger and a lot more, a marvel indeed. But every discovery brings a background, and the background here is that skin development experiment is done on a beautiful and mysterious woman. Both the doctor and the patient have a rough past that is a bomb waiting to explode at any slightest movement…

The film has moments that are extremely disturbing and at certain points could be said even cathartic: they take the truth and the story to extreme levels. Everything has an aura of mystery that is unfolding slowly and little by little and there comes a point in the film that really is a complete knockout. There is a certain point in the film where unexpected things start to happen, crazy and full of frenzy.

Antonio Banderas has to act in more movies like this: his performance in this movie become sublime and scary, it carries on in the film as a sad violin that is playing a sad melody. And that makes it great. Elena Anaya is also excellent; seriously, you will understand when you watch this movie.

The rest of the cast is excellent and it helps develop the story in a neat and smooth way: they are where they have to be at all times and give pathos to the narrative.

One thing I liked about this film is the music, made of frenetic violins that give tension at the most shocking scenes of the movie. It's great.

“La piel que habito” certainly follows Hitchcock’s way of filming, Almodóvar could say that he channeled the spirit of Alfred and maked a movie that I'm sure he would have been proud of. It's a very intelligent psychological thriller/horror movie and, yes this is what gives volume to the story.
