Love is
awkward, no doubt. "Eagle vs. Shark" seems to be made just
for reminding us that. This is the story of Lily, a naive cashier of a fast food
franchise in Wellington, New Zealand, who falls for Jarrod, an insufferable jerk who has never been able to overcome the traumas of adolescence and works in a video game store.
Jarrod has a
mission in life: to kill his school nemesis. Lily, silly as she is, offered to
take him to his hometown so he can fulfill his noble end. Once there, with
friends, family, scenes full of sorrow and waterproof sweatshirts with fluorescent
colors, he realizes that love can also be a mistake that sometimes is worth making.
That is
precisely what this film is about. It is a flawed romantic comedy, which
could have happened to the friend, the friend of a friend or yourself. To watch
it is to understand that we always have a geek and a dumb part inside us.
It will help you understand that we are all a little bit hated at our work places and that we all live full of unresolved
issues that kill us in the inside. If you liked Juno, sure you will like this
film too.
This movie, of
course, also has its weak parts; but it quickly offsets them with scenes full of clever black humor and games of stop motion, going back and forth
whimsically between songs that are real jewels.
This is one
of those films that survive thanks to its soundtrack. One should see it at
least to realize that the tasteless cashiers serving burgers at McDonald's fall in
love too, to the beat of an 80’s song.
