"Love
is a matter of chance," says the protagonist of "2046". He is a man who has left the love of his life and reflects on his loss in a hotel in
Hong Kong.
Why is it a
matter of chance? Because sometimes you want to love and the other person does not and vice versa. Exceptionally, the two desires coincide, but the rest of love
is to search without finding.
This is the
new approach of the director Wong Kar-wai, the same from the memorable "In
the Mood for Love", that hit the theathers a few years ago and is still shown with success in some film clubs.
In "In the Mood for Love", the love affair was impossible because the lovers were married and their partners
were lovers between them as well. In “2046” love comes back to be elusive, but in this
case it is because the frustrated protagonist is unable to commit to women that are
dying for him.
The
similarity between the two films is not limited to the impossibility of love.
As in "In the Mood for Love," in "2046" the form
triumphs over substance. A slow and disjointed narration makes it so that the story, sometimes, does not to move either forward or backward.
But the best
thing one can do is to relax and enjoy the exceptional aesthetic achievements
of "2046". The masterful use of framing and composition of Wong
Kar-wai says more about love than its own script.
The beauty
of the film does not end there: excellent performances by the actors and
the beautiful way they fit in with all the elements make this another excellent
film by this director.
